21 Four Meetings with Juliette
Madame Juliette Moussier faithfully stood her ground. Make no mistake: this was a mark of unusual courage. Not to give in when you are in the hands of the enemy constitutes one kind of valor; but not to waver, to confront the danger and stand your ground when you know that you are being watched, that the threat of arrest is hovering over you all the time, and that at any moment you may see "them" arrive is an exploit of another magnitude.
Madame Juliette knew that we still needed her, and she would hold out to the very end, like a real militant. I had arranged with her, as one of those precautionary measures that turned out to be indispensable, that anyone coming to her from me would give her a red button. Raichmann had reached an impasse because he had not known this detail. I had not glossed over the truth; I had warned her that the shop was certainly being watched but that it was indispensable that she remain there. I also added that it was necessary for her to sever all contact with her comrades of the resistance. Fernand Pauriol, whom I had informed of the situation, would continue to keep an eye on her.
Katz was to pretend to cooperate with the Germans, as I had instructed him at the time of our meeting in Berg's presence. When he returned from his mission he was to say that Juliette had been glad to see him, but that she had lost contact with the Communist Party. She would try to reestablish the liaison and would give her answer a week later. Hillel was to return from this second expedition with a positive reply: Juliette's contacts had agreed to the meeting, but they had not concealed their apprehensions, and they demanded that I be the one to deliver the message. The object of all this was to force Giering to allow me to go and see Madame Juliette. This way, I could finally send my report to the Center.
But why such a series of comings and goings? To reassure Giering and his superiors in Berlin.
Giering was hesitant to enlist Katz in the operation and confided his reasons to me.
"Katz was the ideal messenger before he fell into the hands of our men.
For this same reason, he may try to trick us now. One cannot be sure that a man who has been so badly treated will not do the opposite of what is expected."
His logic was impeccable. I tried to set his mind at rest:
"Katz won't feel like a traitor. He is passionately committed to the idea of a separate peace. That alone will dictate his conduct."
But Giering still had reservations. He gave Hillel a statement to sign in which it was agreed that if he ran away or tried to warn Madame Juliette, his wife, his children, and I would all be shot.
He signed without flinching.
Several days before Katz went to the confectioner's shop, the
Sonderkommando went into a fever of activity.
